Some collaborative exercises work best with pairs—in particular, those exercises that require close attention (such as sharing whole essays). Other collaborative exercises work best when student writers receive multiple points of view (for example, when the aim of the exercise is to narrow a topic, sharpen a thesis, and so on).

Before I assign a formal essay to my students, I like to take them through some collaborative brainstorming strategies to help prepare them for the task. I particularly love collaborative brainstorming activities because they provide students with an opportunity to work together, discuss their thoughts, and explore new perspectives.
Writing stage - 60 minutes: After the planning stage, the “collaborative” part of the writing stops and each person must write their piece in complete silence for the next hour. The occasional groan about poor grammar or “eureka” at an amazing point is permitted, though ideally not so it disturbs everyone.
